Pike County Volunteer Corps Honor Roll presented to the Pike County Commissioners

In celebration of Volunteer Recognition Week, April 18th to 24th, Pike County Volunteer Corps, an initiative of Pike United Way, presented the Pike County Commissioners with the Volunteer Corps Honor Roll at the Wednesday April 21st Commissioners’ meeting. Attending were representatives of United Way’s Volunteer Steering Committee and The Pike County Dispatch.

As a community service, the Honor Roll is being published as a six page special section in this weeks’ Pike County Dispatch. The Honor Roll lists the names of thousands of Pike county residents who have volunteered in the last year in and around Pike County. It includes the names of the volunteers we were able to identify at this time. The special section also has a coupon people can fill out to get involved in their own volunteer experience and a list of some current volunteer positions.

Pike County Volunteer Corps honors all the wonderful people who give a little of their time, each day, to their neighbors. Without the help of volunteers, hundreds of Pike County groups, agencies and organizations would not be able to provide their services. Volunteers are the backbone of our community.

Pike County Volunteer Corps honors ALL volunteers. Whether they volunteer for their local community, a food pantry, a local library, a school, a fire and rescue company or their place of worship they provide assistance that makes our community a better place to live and are hereby recognized for their selfless and outstanding service.

Red “V” volunteer ribbons, donated by Wal-Mart, are available for all the volunteers on the Honor Roll at the United Way of Pike County office. If you see your name on the Honor Roll and have not received your ribbon or, if you are a volunteer and are not listed on this years Honor Roll, stop by and pick up a ribbon. And if you see folks wearing a red “V” ribbon please take the time to thank them for their service.

Pike County Commissioners and Pike United Way Proclaim April 18-24, 2004 as First Annual Pike County Volunteer Recognition Week

Did you know that there are thousands of people in Pike County who volunteer their time to help their neighbors? Did you know that there are hundreds of local organizations, agencies and groups that rely on these volunteers to help them deliver help and services? Did you know that April 18-24, National Volunteer Week, is being celebrated in Pike County as Volunteer Recognition Week for the first time?

This is why the three Commissioners of Pike County, in concert with the United Way of Pike County, issued a proclamation at their April 14 meeting to acknowledge the importance of Pike County volunteers and to thank them and offer gratitude for their significant contributions that make our local area a much better place.

Many volunteers will be wearing commemorative red ribbons during the week of April 18-24. When you see them, please say hello and offer your thanks. The April 22 issue of the Pike County Dispatch will carry an insert listing the name of every volunteer we were able to identify at this time. Please read it and when you see the name of a friend, call him or her and say thanks. If you see your own name, or if you, too, are wearing a commemorative red ribbon, pat yourself on the back and accept the thanks and gratitude of all of us in Pike County. The insert in the Pike County dispatch also has a coupon for you to use if you would like to volunteer.

Volunteer Recognition Week is the first step in the creation of the Pike County Volunteer Corps, an initiative of United Way of Pike County, dedicated to bringing together organizations that need volunteers and people who are looking for meaningful volunteer experience. If you are looking for volunteer opportunities, go to
www.PikePAHelp.org and click on volunteers needed. If you are an organization looking for volunteers, post your listing on the website. You can also get further information by calling United Way at 1-888-306-6963 or 1-570-296-9980, fax 1-570-296-5571, or email uwpc@ptd.net.
Pike County Volunteer Fire Federation Receives Thanks and Gratitude From Pike Commissioners and Pike United Way, and Pleads For Community Support

Pike Fire and Rescue volunteers are always at the forefront in covering emergencies of all kinds across Pike County. We think of them most often as firefighters, but they are also first responders at accidents of every description, medical emergencies, and much more. They are very active in community events and educational programs, and fire and emergency preventive programs. Most of all, they are often our friends and neighbors, ordinary folks who do extraordinary things in our behalf with no thought of material reward.

So when the Pike County Commissioners first learned of the Pike United Way initiative to honor all county volunteers in the first annual Pike County Volunteer Recognition Week, April 18-24, 200, it was quickly agreed that local fire and rescue volunteers should receive special recognition.

At their April 14, 2004 meeting, after declaring the week of April 18-24 to be Volunteer Recognition Week, the commissioners and United Way jointly presented a certificate of appreciation, honoring all fire and rescue companies in Pike County. It was presented to Roger Maltby, Pike County EMA Coordinator, as the designated representative of the Pike County Volunteer Fire Federation, parent organization to local fire and rescue teams.

In thanking the Commissioners and United Way, Roger Maltby spoke about the continuing need for volunteers in the local fire and rescue operations. He said that there were many ways to help, and not only in the strenuous, highly trained arena of fire and rescue front line operations. He said that help is needed with vehicle and building maintenance, administrative duties, fund raising events such as bingo, dinners, breakfasts, auctions, etc. He went on to say that while some volunteer opportunities require intensive training, others do not, and that while some require many hours, there are always openings for volunteers whose free time is limited. He urges anyone who would like to volunteer to call or write their local fire and/or rescue company. Their telephone numbers and addresses are in the telephone directory, but they are also available at the Pike United Way office 413 Broad Street Milford, Phone 1-570-296-9980 or toll free 1-888-306-6963, or fax 1-570-296-5571, or email

Pike County United Way is gearing up to lead a community wide salute to all volunteers in our area during National Volunteer Week, April 18th - 24th. Generous support is pouring in already! The Pike County Commissioners have announced that they will open the celebration by issuing a Volunteer Recognition Week Proclamation at their regular meeting on April 14th at 10:00 A.M. in the administration building at 506 Broad Street, Milford. Thanks to Store Manager Chris Slocum, our local Wal-Mart has donated yards of red ribbon and lots of pins that the Explorers Club at Delaware Valley Middle School is now hard at work assembling into "V" shaped lapel pins to give to every volunteer in Pike County in honor of their support and dedication to our community.

If your agency, business or organization has volunteers who have served one or more days in the past year, they will receive a volunteer recognition ribbon if you contact the Pike County United Way at
uwpc@ptd.net or call 1-888-306-6963 and provide their names. In addition, each volunteer's name will be displayed on the Volunteer Honor Roll, which will be publicly displayed throughout Pike County during April and May. To all volunteers, wherever you serve, we salute YOU!
Volunteering In Pike County Gets Easier

United Way of Pike County is dedicated to promoting volunteerism in our community. In August 2003 United Way of Pike County launched www.PikePaHelp.org, an online resource for information about all social service agencies serving Pike County. Since then over 140 agencies, serving Pike County, have been listed on the site. Now, in an effort to help connect people who wish to volunteer with current local volunteer opportunities, United Way of Pike County is helping PikePaHelp.org expand its list of volunteer needs. “We want people to know how they can get involved in the easiest way possible.” says Jerry Tamburino, a VISTA working with United Way, “People who want to volunteer and have access to the internet should go to www.PikePaHelp.org. They can search the volunteer opportunities on the site or find contact information for a specific agency and contact them directly to volunteer.” According to Janice Tamburino, also a VISTA at United Way of Pike County, “Those without internet access should call United Way of Pike County’s office and we will refer them to a local agency in need of their help.” and she adds, “There are plenty of fun volunteer opportunities in Pike County but sometimes it’s hard to find them on your own – that’s where The United Way can help.” For more information on volunteering in Pike County call United Way of Pike County at 570-296-9980 or go to www.PikePaHelp.org to connect directly with local agencies needing volunteers.

The remarkable success of United Way of Pike County is due in large part to many volunteers who do everything from spending part of their free time in our office, to coordinating activities related to our successful fundraising effort.

The Pike County United Way organizes an annual Day of Caring to provide volunteers for a day to assist local non-profit organizations in a wide variety of community projects. See the Day of Caring Page for more information.
