| December 24, 2006 United Way of Pike County Volunteers Honor Dr. King by Entertaining the Elderly
January 15th is typically a day off from school and from work, but this year, residents of Pike County are making this a “day on” to provide service and support to the elderly. In the spirit of Martin Luther King, volunteers from Pike County will be performing community service projects such as singing and Irish Bag Pipes for the elderly audience. “We saw this, MLK Day of Service, as an opportunity to get involved and support Pike County Seniors” stated Mike Peifer, Board President of the United Way of Pike County. President Peifer goes on to say, “One good way to learn about Martin Luther King is to get involved in the community and serve people of all ages.” David Eisner, chief executive officer of the Corporation for National and Community Service, a Washington, D.C. based organization, said, “We are asking every American to get involved and honor Dr. King with a living memorial of service on this holiday. Dr. King’s legacy was bringing people together across racial, age and socio-economic lines through meaningful activity that resulted in a better and more unified country. All of us can build on that legacy by reaching across artificial barriers to serve our neighbors and address community needs.” Susan and Kaitlyn- Sheenan Rustin will provide a senior sing-a-long and Bill Devereux will provide music played on Irish Bag Pipes for the residents of Milford Nursing Home. Bob Veneziale and Mike Donlon, Committee Chairs, agree that “joining students, teachers, and parents together to support our county’s seniors will be a great way to spend the day off. We are looking for volunteers that can help support the clients of Milford Nursing Home.” If you would like any information on the Milford Nursing Home, please call 570-491-4121If you would like to join our volunteers for this event or any other United Way of Pike County event please give us a call at 570-296-9980 or email us at uwpc@ptd.net. | December 24, 2006 United Way of Pike County is Turning up the Temperature at Rite Aid of Milford
Even though Pike United Way has reached 60% of its fund raising goal, the influx of gifts has slowed. So Pike United Way is renewing its efforts and reaching out to those who have not yet contributed this year. Board President Mike Peifer and Campaign Chair Ron Schmalzle agree that fundraising efforts are impacted by the holiday season, commenting that, “the holiday season is quickly approaching and many people are out shopping for loved ones. We believe that the generous people of Pike County will continue to support the United Way of Pike County throughout the holiday season. Many residents know that the funds raised here fund agencies like the Center for Developmental Disabilities, Country Ark Farms, American Red Cross, and a host of other local agencies. We applaud the efforts of Pike County residents and anticipate further support.”. Mike Peifer continues, "The focus of Pike United Way is “Offering Hope, Building Futures”. This is a very special mission because we focus exclusively on the needs of people here at home. Whether you live, or work, or play in Pike County, you can look around and see human need. That is why every gift you make stays here to support the needs of those who are your friends, neighbors or just plain community citizens that you might pass on the street.” If you are interested in supporting the United Way of Pike County, please send your check to United Way of Pike County, PO Box 806, Milford, PA 18337, download a pledge card from our website, www.unitedwaypike.org, donated via paypal, or call us at 1-570-296-9980, or toll free at 1-888-306-6963. | November 16, 2006 United Way of Pike County Salutes Volunteer Extraordinaire, Bob Veneziale
Bob joined us as a volunteer in mid-year 2002, and quickly became the prime mover in making a reality of our dream to create a unified interactive information center that would identify the services all non-profit organizations that serve Pike County, as well as Pike County community events and job listings, a volunteer exchange, and links to other important data sources. This information center, www.PikePaHelp.org is also available in print at public places in Pike County, including libraries, schools and county, township and other community offices. Bob always works hard to find funding and volunteer help for these efforts. Bob was persuaded to join the United Way of Pike County board in June 2003, where he has made his mark, as website master, ace fundraiser, volunteer outreach consultant to other non-profit organizations, and all round good guy. Bob has been employed as a Schering-Plough scientist, since earning his Ph.D. in Developmental Biology and Teratology ('98) from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. He met his wife Laurie in college. They have two children, Michael in middle school, and Gloria in elementary school. Says Bob, "the kids adopted us as their parents in 2002 and we are a forever family. This is the most important and rewarding thing that will happen to us. We hope more people consider adoption since there are so many children that need families". We at Pike United Way know Laurie and the kids well, since they often help with his volunteer activities. Thank you, Bob Veneziale, for your commitment to helping to make Pike United Way the force for good that it has become. | October 26, 2006 Roy Hart and Allstate Insurance Help Kick Off Pike United Way 2006-2007 Annual Campaign
Roy Hart has been active in helping United Way in its fund raising efforts since the beginning of his career, when he lived and worked in Monroe County and served as a loaned executive volunteer. More recently, Roy Hart helped lead the Pike United Way fund raising campaigns in its formative stages, and also sat on the Pike United Way board until the needs of his growing business forced him to step down. Roy Hart is past President of the Rotary Club of Lords Valley, and the Pike County Chamber of Commerce, and is still active in both organizations. When asked why he takes so much time away from his hectic business, civic and family life to help Pike United Way in its mission of "Offering Hope - Building Futures", he said, " this organization is unique in its ability to raise funds, make sure they are used efficiently, that they are used effectively to help organizations achieve their missions of helping neighbors, and that the funds raised are committed to use here at home. Pike United Way has brought a new spirit of energy and creativity to Pike County social services, by initiating volunteer programs, new social services and other community projects. I'm proud to be part of this effort." He went on to say, "Pike County has been good to me and my wife Laurie, my son Patrick, and my daughters Elizabeth and Katherine. My business has been successful, and our family has had a happy life here. Sharing my good fortune by giving back to my community makes me feel good. And, for me, Pike United Way is an important aspect of giving back". | October 11, 2006 United Way of Pike County (UWPC) Announces a Goal of $150,00 at its 2006-2007 Campaign Year Campaign Kick-off
Attendees included many past donors and financial supporters, community leaders, representatives from agencies that have received United Way of Pike County funding, as well as United Way Board members and other volunteers. Campaign Chair Ron Schmalzle kicked off the campaign by announcing that, as in past years, every UWPC board member has already made a generous pledge, and that as a result of these and other early pledges of support, meeting the goal of $150,000 is already well underway. He also announced that the Third Annual Chefs United Dinner at Ehrhardt's Lakeside Restaurant will be on Thursday November 16, beginning at 6:00 p.m. This is a gala occasion at which every restaurateur of note in the area provides a specialty from his menu, starting with a variety of soups through salads, entrees and absolutely sinfully delicious desserts and non-alcoholic beverages, all accompanied by piano cocktail and dinner music, and a cash bar. Ron Schmalzle also noted that, for the first time, there will be a major fund raising event, initiated by high-school students. This "happening" event will be in December. Be sure to watch for more details. President Mike Peifer personally thanked those who helped to make past campaigns a success, and who have already pledged their help again in this campaign. Peifer also commented that the United Way of Pike County's annual campaign goal has grown from $50,000 to this year's goal of $150,000 because the rapid population growth of Pike County is fueling an ever-greater need for expanded and improved social services to meet the needs of its families. "This is an ambitious yet achievable goal," commented President Peifer," but we've got a great team and the support of a great community. We are off to a wonderful start, now we need everyone's help to complete the job. We are confident that the outcome of this year's campaign will enable the United Way of Pike County to continue to provide quality help and support for the county and for those in need." Every gift, to the Pike United Way, large or small, is important, and will help us to maximize services for those in Pike County who are in need. September 28, 2006 American Red Cross Presents Certificate of Appreciation for 9-11 Memorial Blood Drive Success
At the most recent meeting of the United Way of Pike County Board of Directors, American Red Cross Assistant Director Shawn James and Field Representative Dawn Ciorciari presented Certificates of Appreciation to the representatives of local organizations who made the 4th Annual 9 -11 Blood Drive a very successful community event. As she presented the certificates, Dawn Ciorciari said, “The 4th Annual Blood Drive was the largest blood drive in Pike County this year, we collected 93 usable pints of blood, there were 37 first-time donors, and a total of 115 donors in attendance. The people of Pike County should be very proud and excited to be able to help so many people." The success of this year’s drive can be attributed to the continued collaboration of local organizations and their publicity efforts: United Way of Pike County, Pike County Commissioners: Harry Forbes, Richard Caridi and Karl Wagner, Delaware Valley School District, Pike County Chamber of Commerce, and the Pike County Public Library. Ciorciari also recognized the participation and support of the Westfall McDonald’s who supplied coffee and accompaniments for the blood donors, the Day of Caring Volunteers including Delaware Valley Health Occupations Student Association members, the Delaware Valley Vo-tech Food Services students who baked 33 dozen cookies for the refreshment canteen, Price Chopper in Matamoras who supplied canteen supplies and the Milford Diner who helped advertise the event. Accepting the American Red Cross Certificates of Appreciation, at the meeting, were Blood Drive Co-Chairs Stacey Beecher Chelak, United Way Board Member and Pike County Commissioners, Harry Forbes and Richard Caridi along with Dr. Candis Finan, Superintendent of Delaware Valley School District, Susan Jeffers, Director of the Pike County Public Library and Amy Gruzesky, Executive Director of Pike County Chamber of Commerce. | September 27, 2006 Pike United Way Board Welcomes Lee Oakes Back To its Ranks
“Mike Peifer went on to say, “Lee Oakes is also a trustee of the Wayne Memorial Health System and Wayne Memorial Hospital, and a board member of the Pike County Chamber of Commerce, the Pike County Industrial Development Corp., and the Pike County Interagency Council. She has been active in the Kindred Spirits program that brings chamber music programs to our community and its schools. She was a long time member and leader in the Pike County Visioning Process. She chairs the Finance Committee at Hemlock Farms, and serves on various Ad hoc committees there. It will be very helpful to us to again be able to draw upon the kind of expertise these experiences, and her long time career in advertising have given her. All smiles, Lee said, “Happily, when I was eligible to return, Pike United Way had a place for me. Upon attending my first board meeting a short time ago, it was immediately clear that, under the leadership of Mike Peifer, the organization has grown, matured, addressed new and important community priorities and identified new challenges. | September 23, 2006 PIKE UNITED WAY AND 250 COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS DECLARE PIKE COUNTY SIXTH ANNUAL DAY OF CARING A SUCCESS The Sixth Annual Pike county Day of Caring, held on Saturday, September 9, was another inspiring success according to Pike United Way Co-Chairs Mike Donlon and Sue Robbins. Robbins explained that this event links community volunteers with non-profit agencies for a single day to do projects and tasks that enable the non-profits to focus more of their efforts on their primary mission of helping others. Donlon reported that volunteers helped 20 agencies complete 24 projects. Projects included painting and repairing facilities, mulching and marking trails, planting trees, preparing mailers, detailing transport vans, cleaning and landscaping playgrounds and facilities, assisting Pike United Way to expand the data base for its human services website www.PikePaHelp.org, assisting at the 4th Annual 9/11 Memorial Blood Drive, creating reading packets and stocking pantry shelves. Each volunteer received the traditional Day of Caring t-shirt donated by Citizens Bank and their workday began at the Delaware Valley High School with a hearty buffet breakfast sponsored by Woodloch Resort and prepared by the Warrior Cafe staff and vo-tech student volunteers. The volunteers then moved into action as they traveled about Pike County to perform their tasks. Over half of the volunteers were high school students from throughout Pike County. In addition, participants included senior citizens, families, solo individuals and co-workers. In just a single day these amazing adult and high school volunteers provided over 1,400 hours of unpaid labor, at an equivalent dollar value of over $25,000. They received heartfelt thanks from Pike United Way and the recipients of their hard work and community spirit. Donlon and Robbins announced that the Seventh Annual Day of Caring would be Saturday, September 8, 2007 as Pike United Way continues "Offering Hope, Building Futures". If you would like to volunteer now please visit www.PikePaHelp.org for a listing of volunteer opportunities or call Pike United Way at 570-296-9980 or toll free: 888-306-6963. |

| September 15, 2006 VOLUNTEERS SHOW THEY CARE ABOUT COMMUNITY MARIA POFF Community News Writer Pocono Record (Original Post)
Although the sunny day was the warmest of the week and the rocky soil — affectionately known as "Pocono Potatoes" by residents — made their project even more challenging, volunteers spent the day planting native trees and shrubs around PEEC's new visitor activity center. The shrubs were purchased through an Environmental Education Grant that PEEC received from Columbia Gas/NiSource. The native trees and shrubs were planted to attract wildlife, create wildlife viewing areas and provide ground cover around the dining and education facility. "The trees and shrubs look great around the new building. I'm hoping that our volunteers will come back years from now and tell their loved ones that they helped create this beautiful habitat," commented Flo Mauro, PEEC's Director of Development. The center's staff was pleased to see that 14 volunteers were students from the Delaware Valley School District who passed up the opportunity to sleep in and instead chose to help their community. "We're just glad we can help out. PEEC is the coolest place ever to volunteer," said Jeff White, 17, a senior at Delaware Valley High School. Sharon Wary, PEEC's Director of Business Management, spent the day planting along with the volunteers and was extremely pleased with the outcome. "It's so great to see everyone out here working together, especially all of the kids from Delaware Valley. They're working very hard today and they're giving up their Saturday to help us out. That really means a lot," said Wary. More than 252 Pike County United Way volunteers began their day at the Delaware Valley High School cafeteria with a big breakfast of sausage, eggs, and pancakes and amazingly, after such a huge breakfast, they put in a long day at their various assignments. This year's volunteers helped out 24 organizations around the county with projects such as cleaning, landscaping, painting, repairs, trail maintenance, and clerical duties. To continue the spirit of giving, United Way volunteers also donated a total of 97 pints of blood during the fourth annual 9/11 blood drive on Saturday at Delaware Valley Middle School in Dingmans Ferry where more than 115 individuals came out to support the blood drive, 37 of them first time donors. The American Red Cross, Pike County Chamber of Commerce, Pike County Library System's "Read While You Bleed Program," and the Delaware Valley School District sponsored the blood drive, which has become the most successful blood drive in the county. Executive Secretary TerriAnne Caraluzzo has been with the Pike County United Way for four years and was very pleased with this year's Day of Caring. "Our numbers have nearly doubled since the first Day of Caring event," said Caraluzzo. "It was a tremendous success for everyone involved. The annual Day of Caring has become an important event in the life of Pike County, exemplifying the spirit of volunteerism and a tradition of community sharing and giving." | September 1, 2006 Bravo To Improvements in Blood Drive Procedures at 9/11 Memorial Blood Drive
Mrs. Buchanan had just heard about the new one stop procedure that ensures shorter wait times for those who volunteer to give blood. Perhaps you would like to know more about this too. Here’s how it works. The old station-by-station stop and go and wait procedure is a thing of the past. Now one trained volunteer is assigned to each participant and performs all phases of the sign-in, health questionnaire, disclosure forms, physical and blood testing, eliminating the long wait of the past at various stations along the way to the real purpose of your visit – giving blood. She said she was impressed, too, by the new Double Red Program that enables a participant to donate as many red cells during one visit, as it used to take two visits to do. “This is a very significant improvement in providing help to those who are waiting for blood, and who have sometimes been at risk because of a shortage of blood product”. “And to make a good change better,” said Mrs. Buchanan, “there is now a simple way to schedule an appointment at your convenience during the day, simply by phoning TerriAnne Caraluzzo at 570-296-9980, or toll free 888-306-6963. All in all, these changes work to the benefit of blood donors, as well as blood receivers. It also helps the trained volunteers to use their time more productively. So again, bravo to the American Red Cross for making these important improvements.” The 9/11 Memorial Blood Drive, part of the Annual Day of Caring, is an initiative of United Way of Pike County, in partnership with the American Red Cross, Pike County Chamber of Commerce, the Pike County Library System “Read While You Bleed Program”, Delaware Valley School District, and many local merchants, volunteers and media friends. The 9/11 Memorial Blood Drive will take place on Saturday, September 9, from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the Delaware Valley School Complex on Routes 206-6 near Matamoras. The entrance and parking area will be clearly marked. .Light refreshments will be served, tee shirts will be offered to all volunteers and participants, and the American Red Cross has fun prizes up its sleeve. | September 1, 2006 Day of Caring Volunteer, Delaware Valley High School Senior, Mary Beth Nied Reflects on Her 2005 Day of Caring Experience
A spirited camp song greeted the wearily approaching volunteers for a first-class meal of salad, pizza and bug-juice. After the hall quieted down, and right before dessert, Ravenell Williams, Camp Speers-Eljabar YMCA Executive Director, thanked all the volunteers for their hard morning’s work. Campers and staff alike applauded our efforts. It was then on to the afternoon activities. Some volunteers headed to the main building to clean the floors and windows while others, like my group, were sent on liter patrol. We traveled along the paths we had straightened out only hours before to pick up the trash we could find. We took a break at a camp fire pit to reflect on the day’s work. We were proud of our efforts and vowed to return again next year for the Day of Caring. As the day neared its completion, bags of trash were filled, footpaths were orderly, and the volunteers were tired. We assembled again in that vacant parking lot for the final moments of the day. At last, we board the bus back to Milford. As the fatigued volunteers sat quietly on the yellow school bus, one feeling rang true: as tired as we all were, it was great to lend a helping hand to an organization that helps so many in our community. At the end of the day 20 non-profit organizations were aided. If you’d like to be part of this year’s Day of Caring on Saturday, September 9, here’s how. You must be 14 years old, or older. If you are under age 18, you will need your parent’s consent. There is no upper age limit if you are in good health, and want to help. The day begins at 7:45 a.m. with a free breakfast at the Delaware Valley High School located on Route 6-209, near Matamoras. You will sign in, get your assignment and your t-shirt courtesy of Citizens Bank, have breakfast and join about 225 others to fan out around the county, to work and to make a difference in our area by a single day of caring. You can register by calling TerriAnne at United Way toll-free at 1-888-306-6963, or by downloading the registration form at www.unitedwaypike.org.
