Left to Right: Pat Dolge, United Way Board Member, Mark Lucas, President & CEO Altec Lansing Technology, Inc., Barbara J. Buchanan, United Way Honorary Campaign Chair and Board Member, Alan Dolge, United Way Board President
For the third year in a row, Altec Lansing, and its employees, have taken a leadership position in helping United Way of Pike County to reach its goal, which in 2004-05 is $115,000. Pike United Way will use these funds to provide community services for the needy, under its banner of "Offering Hope - Building Futures."

A world leader in electronic technology, Altec Lansing maintains its roots here and is among the largest employers in Pike County, so it knows first hand that there are many people here at home who need a helping hand.

This year alone, the combined corporate and employee campaign will deliver over $5,000 to the Pike United Way campaign, funds that will help provide needed human services in every area of the county. Altec Lansing also participates in the annual United Way Day of Caring and in the 9/11 Memorial Blood Drive, two more examples of their steadfast commitment to giving back to the community that houses their business enterprise.

If you would like to join Altec Lansing and the many other supporters of the Pike United Way 2004-05 Fundraising campaign, send a check or money order to United Way of Pike County, Box 806, Milford, PA, 18337, or go on-line at

United Way of Pike County announces today that the contributions for the 2004-2005 Campaign now total 60% of the $115,000 goal. Peter Ioppolo and Mark Kirsten, Delaware Valley High School Assistant Principals, joined with United Way Board President, Alan Dolge and Roy Hart of the United Way Campaign Committee, today in announcing that the Delaware Valley School District employee fund raising campaign for United Way has pledged over $5,000. This is a record for the school district and a record for any Pike County employee campaign so far this year. Alan Dolge commented "the leadership demonstrated by the employees of the Delaware Valley Schools is enormously helpful to United Way as we increase our funding of human services in Pike County. All of the funds raised here, remain here to provide help to programs and services that are vital to the well being of Pike County families." Added Roy Hart, "We are especially appreciative of the efforts of Dr. Candice Finan, Mr. Ioppolo and Mr. Kirsten in chairing the employee campaign at the schools. Their vigorous efforts culminated in surpassing their goal of $5,000 to help us to fulfill our mission of local service. Every participating DVSD employee has made an enormous contribution to the community in which they earn their living and in which many of them live."

"Surpassing the goal was a team effort and we want to thank our staff for their generosity," said Mark Kirsten. Added Peter Ioppolo, "We are very glad that we reached our goal and that our efforts will help to make a difference in our Pike community."

Passing through the traffic light at Rite Aid in Milford, one can check the United Way's progress by glancing at the goal thermometer, which was recently updated to reveal the 60% mark. West Salloway, Account Specialist at Fort Knox
Pike United Way is teaming up with Action Outfitters in Milford and Fort Knox Storage in Matamoras to make some local childrens' holidays a bit brighter this year. From now until mid-December you are asked to drop off new or used bicycles at Fort Knox Storage on 5th Street in Matamoras. Used bikes need to be in reasonably good condition. West Salloway, Account Specialist at Fort Knox, says, "We love to help out like this. We've been in Matamoras for about six years", and adds, "the community's been great to us and we want to give back when we can."

Shaun Hamilton, the Store Manager at Action Outfitters in Milford is donating his talents and will pick up and repair the bikes you drop off, he says, "We want to be sure the kids get safe bikes so we'll clean them up and check them out, fixing small things as needed." Judging by the high quality bikes being sold by Action Outfitters, the children who are lucky enough to get one of these bikes will be getting something really special. Noting that Action Outfitters have been in Milford for eleven years, Shaun adds, "We are part of this community and want to be known as a good neighbor and a business who cares."

If you, also, want to be known as someone who cares and help brighten a local child's holiday, please drop off your used or new bikes to Fort Knox Storage, 405 Fifth Street, Matamoras or call ahead to make sure they're open at (570) 491-0000. United Way Food Drive at Wal-Mart to Help Hungry Pike Families

Left to Right: Alan Dolge of Pike United Way, J.P. Jones, Carolyn Stiehl and Chris Slocum of Wal-Mart, Christine Obser of Pike Department of Human Development
While many of us are busy planning our Thanksgiving feasts, other local residents are concerned with having enough to eat each day. To help alleviate the problem of hunger, United Way of Pike County is joining with Wal-Mart in Westfall and the Pike County Human Development Department to collect food for our neighbors in need. Chris Slocum, Wal-Mart's Store Manager, came up with the idea in a recent meeting with Pike United Way's President, Alan Dolge and AmeriCorps*VISTA, Jerry Tamburino.

Although he his busy with the expansion of his store into a Super Wal-Mart, Chris decided that having a food drive would be a great way to help others in the community and put food on the tables of many local families during these tough economic times. "With the prices of things like gas and groceries being so high right now, we wanted to help the community out," Chris notes, and adds, "Wal-Mart believes in doing good works and supporting the community in any way we can." Noting that many food drives end at Thanksgiving, Chris suggested, "let's collect the food right up 'til the end of the year - we can distribute the food as we go - but this will give more people a chance to participate."
Christine Obser, Executive Director of Pike County Department of Human Development, is well acquainted with the needs of the food pantries in Pike County, "The need for food becomes especially acute this time of the year when many of our residents lose their seasonal jobs - the food pantries all report many more families at their door", and she adds, "Community minded businesses like Wal-Mart are integral to providing the necessary support to our families in need."

Everyone is encouraged to donate non-perishable food items by bringing them to the service desk in the front of the Westfall Wal-Mart anytime between now and the end of the year. J.P. Jones, Wal-Mart's Assistant Manager and Carolyn Stiehl, Wal-Mart's Receiving Manager will box up the food you bring - then the food will be collected and distributed by Christine and her helpers at Pike Human Development to Pike County's food pantries and hungry families. "Our goal", says Chris from Wal-Mart, "is to help as many needy families as possible have memorable holidays this year."

If you want to join in with this exciting and rewarding event just drop by Wal-Mart or call them at (570) 491-4940. For information about all Pike United Way initiatives call (570) 296-9980 or visit

New Wheelchair Ramp Means "Freedom" to Pike Resident

Adriana (in center), her son Todd (on her left) and her husband Ray (on her right) and some of the Habitat volunteers who installed her ramp.
Thanks to your generosity to United Way of Pike County, another Pike County resident has a new wheelchair ramp. "This means freedom to me", says Adriana Doering as she oversees the completion of the new ramp being installed on her home by volunteers from Habitat for Humanity of Pike County. Adriana is the latest recipient of a ramp provided through funds from United Way of Pike County's Community Ramp Fund. "I have a power chair but I couldn't use it because I had no way to get out my front door - I was housebound - now I can get out." Due to her medical condition, Adriana can only walk very short distances, "the stairs were really hard and I couldn't manage them by myself." Through a suggestion from a family member, Adriana called the local Habitat and found out about United Way's Ramp Fund. The fund was initiated by a partnership between Pike United Way, Habitat for Humanity, the Lords Valley Rotary Club and a local anonymous donor as a way to get ramps to people who need them in Pike County. People who get the ramps promise to pay the fund back, as best they can, so there will always be enough money in the fund for the next person in need. The volunteers who built Adriana's new ramp included Harry Foos, Mike Donlon, Jim LaRiviere, Phil Conway, Todd Doering, Rody Clayton, Joe Plutnicki, John Shephard, Jack Lenihan Bob Giddings and Anita Giddings.

A Model for Community Partnerships: PEEC, United Way of Pike County and Home Depot

Team Depot at PEEC: Rachel Davenport, Alex Dichterenko, Bonnie Morgan, George Pycik, George Towle, Wendy Nolan and Patty Norrell
Tom Shimalla, PEEC's Director of Operations
With assistance from Pike United Way, Home Depot has come to the assistance of another Pike County human service agency: Pocono Environmental Education Center (PEEC).

Paul Carney, the Manager of the Home Depot in Matamoras is very clear about his store's dedication to our community, "We want to be seen as being a good neighbor - helping where we can." Home Depot's employees, who volunteer, are called "Team Depot" and are willing and able to tackle practically any project local non-profit agencies need help with. "We often are more able to donate labor than money or material - but we will take the requests on a case-by-case basis", says Paul, and adds, "We encourage all other businesses in our area to get involved as well. There's something for all of us to do."

George Towle, the coordinator of Team Depot, makes it clear, "We live locally and know how important it is to be involved helping our community be a better place to live and the employees who volunteer get such a good feeling from doing this. The stories they bring back to the other workers about how much fun they had help other people get excited about volunteering too."

Pike United Way's President, Alan Dolge, knows about Paul's sincerity, "They came to our aid to refurbish and move our sign, then again at the Annual Family Community Expo and again for our Day Of Caring", and adds, "Community businesses, like Home Depot, are invaluable partners and integral to our efforts to support the residents of Pike County. After all, we all have a stake in building a strong community."

Team Depot's most recent assignment coincides with Home Depot's annual volunteer effort: the National Week of Service. Their work at PEEC includes painting and installing new windows in some of the PEEC's many cabins. Tom Shimalla, PEEC's Director of Operations is very thankful for the help, "The volunteer work Team Depot is doing allows us to spend more of our funds on program activities. They really are doing a great thing."

His passion for helping youth become strong and involved members of their community is evident in the many quality activities offered at Camp Speers-Eljabar YMCA. Ravanell points out the similarities between Pike United Way and Camp Speers, Our mission, at YMCA, and United Way of Pike County’s mission are almost identical. We both are involved in building strong communities. Pike United Way supports us so I want to support them , and adds, YMCA and United Way are partners in making this as quality a community as possible. As far as the importance of individual Pike County residents getting involved, Ravenell talks about his own reasons for being involved, I’m involved because there are people less fortunate than we are and there is great pleasure in being a humanitarian helping people change their lives for the better.

American Red Cross Presents Certificates of Appreciation for 9-11 Memorial Blood Drive Success

From Left: Pat Dolge, Dawn Ciorciari, Ellen Schaffner and Dr. Candis Finan
At the most recent meeting of the United Way of Pike County Board of Directors, the American Red Cross presented Certificates of Appreciation to the representatives of local organizations who made the 9-11 Memorial Blood Drive such a huge success. Dawn Ciorciari, a Field Representative with American Red Cross Blood Services, said, This was the most successful blood drive in Pike County’s history, collecting one hundred useable pints of blood. We want to thank all the people who did such magnificent work. Noting that one pint of blood can help as many as four people, Dawn continued, The people of Pike County should feel proud to have been part of such a wonderful effort helping so many people. The success of this year’s drive can be attributed to the collaboration of four local organizations and their publicity efforts: Pike United Way, Delaware Valley School District, Pike County Library and Pike Chamber of Commerce. However, Dawn also recognized the participation and support of the McDonald’s in Matamoras and Jorgenson’s Deli in Milford who supplied the food and drink for the blood donors and the Milford Diner who helped advertise the event. Accepting the American Red Cross Certificates of Appreciation, at the meeting, were Pat Dolge, member of the United Way Board and co-chair of The 9-11 Memorial Blood Drive, Ellen Schaffner, Assistant Director of the Pike County Library and Dr. Candis Finan, Superintendent of Delaware Valley School District and President of Pike County Chamber of Commerce. Dawn also said, I want to thank the other Co-chair of the 9-11 Memorial Blood Drive, Barbara J. Buchanan , who was unable to attend the meeting.

Frank Redington Welcomed to Pike United Way Board

Frank Redington in front of the new Pike County Dime Bank location on Route 739 due to open in early October
As Dime Bank’s Vice President of Commercial Lending, Chairman of Pike County Industrial Development Corporation and the newest member of United Way of Pike County’s Board of Directors, Frank Redington sits at the crossroads of Pike County’s business and human service communities. Speaking about Dime Bank, Frank states, In my forty years in banking I have never seen a bank more community focused than Dime Bank. We believe in people. He notes the similarity of his employer’s business philosophy and Pike United Way’s mission. We’re both involved in building communities helping people be the best they can. He also compares the feeling he gets from helping people through his business and the rewards of seeing people helped through Pike United Way’s allocations, and adds, it is rewarding to look around the community and see all the people and businesses you’ve helped.

Frank notes, The great thing about supporting Pike United Way is they are not focused on one organization but, instead, they enable businesses and individuals to get more out of their donations by funding many community groups , and adds, United Way is about those we can help not us, as individuals, but all of us in a united way; a community. Standing in front of the newest Dime Bank location in Pike County (due to open in early October but presently under construction on Route 739 just south of SR2001) Frank notes the recent rapid growth in Pike County and how it is now even more important for all of us to get involved in our community, Many of us overlook that with the additional people, arriving daily now in Pike County, comes the inevitable growth in human need and the increased importance of the programs Pike United Way supports.

Giving Back to the Community The Tom Quick Inn

From Left: The Tom Quick Inn’s Abe Wohl, Gracie Calabrese and Keith Hodge.
For its’ Fourth Annual Day of Caring, Pike United Way, once again, teamed up with The Tom Quick Inn to provide the, approximately, two hundred forty volunteers with a hearty and delicious breakfast before they headed out to their worksites. According to The Tom Quick Inn’s co-owner, Abe Wohl, We took over the restaurant from the former owners, Pam and Dick Lutfy, in early 2004 and our intentions are to continue the good traditions they initiated like the partnership with United Way , and added, it was our pleasure to do this. Keith Hodge, who is usually very busy in the kitchen, added, This is a family business we are very appreciative of the support our family gets from the community and we feel it’s important for us to give something back. Pike United Way and the Day of Caring provide a good way to do that.

Gracie Calabrese, who focuses her talents on the inn’s special events and lunch buffet, says This lets us connect better with the local people and helps to keep Milford’s small town, close knit family feel. For those who don’t know, Gracie used to own Gracie’s Place in East Stroudsburg and Celentano’s Bakery in the Old Lumber Yard in Milford. She says, I want all my old friends to know I’m still around , and adds, this area has the best people anything we can do to help them we will.

It’s Ba-a-ack!

Rite Aid Manager, Robert Martone, standing next to the, newly returned, Pike United Way sign at the corner of Broad and Harford in Milford.
Have you seen it yet? Thanks to Home Depot’s Fred Ludeman and George Pycik United Way of Pike County’s sign is back, at its’ winter home, in front of the Rite Aid on the corner of Harford and Broad in Milford. Robert Martone, Rite Aid’s Manager is glad it’s back, We’ve missed having it here. After it was taken up to Costa’s Family Fun Park, a few months ago, people asked me where it went. They thought it was stolen. Robert may have been referring to the tongue-in-cheek article about the Missing Sign Mystery Pike United Way wrote when Home Depot moved the sign this past summer. Noting that the sign now advertises Pike United Way’s new campaign thermometer and the new goal of $115,000 Robert adds, Anything we can do to help get to that goal you can count on us!

With participation from community-minded businesses like Rite Aid and Home Depot and the continued generosity of people like you, United Way of Pike County will be able to increase it’s financial support to the area’s non-profit agencies’ programs. The commissioners noted that the kick-off of Pike United Way’s 2004-05 fundraising campaign is set for Friday September 17th and this year’s goal is $115,000.

Pike United Way’s 2004-05 Campaign Chairman, Gerry Hansen, received the proclamation from the commissioners. First-Time HOSA Blood Donors Nervous, Eager, and Excited

DV HOSA members with Barbara J.Buchanan and Pat Dolge, blood drive co-chairs
For the second year in a row, the Health Occupations students at Delaware Valley High School will donate their blood and their Saturday to help the Pike United Way and the American Red Cross for the 2nd Annual 9/11 Memorial Blood Drive on Saturday, September 11, at the Delaware Valley Middle School gym. The blood drive is part of the United Way’s 4th Annual Day of Caring. Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) members will arrive early in the morning to help Red Cross workers get ready for the 10 AM opening and will be at the blood drive all day, until 4 PM, helping out, donating blood, and gaining valuable Health Services experience.

This isn’t about getting paid, says Amanda Mayoros, the student intermediary for the drive. This is about helping people because you want to. Mayoros, who just turned 17 and thus will be able to donate for first time, says she’s not nervous about giving blood. Some of the people I’ve recruited so far are a bit nervous, she admits. But there’s nothing to be afraid of. Plus I told them they’d get a personal radio for free! Donors at this year’s drive will receive a Day of Caring t-shirt courtesy of Citizens Bank, an American Red Cross flashlight/radio combo and a blood drop pin. They will also have a chance to win a Red Cross disaster pack.

Other HOSA first-time donors include Caitlin Wells, Krystal Boyce, Nichole Wachtel, Nadine Kully, Victoria Kresse, and Ireen Barry, all of whom are eager to donate. I’m interested in helping people at the drive, too, says Ireen Barry, adding, Health is really important to me, and I like interacting with people. Susan Briggs, the Health Occupations teacher at the high school, has always encouraged her students to volunteer their services to the community.

Victoria Kresse says, I’m not nervous because I helped out last year. But I understand why people are. As long as you eat something, there’s nothing to worry about! Luckily, there will be plenty of food and refreshments for the donors, provided by the Chamber of Commerce and Jorgenson’s Deli.

For Nadine Kully, one of the many benefits of donating is learning her blood type, a sentiment echoed by the rest of the first-time donors. But the students also recognize how meaningful a blood donation can be. Having the blood drive as a memorial to September 11 is a great idea, says Caitlin Wells. I have a fear of needles, but I lost family that day, and nothing’s going to stop me from donating.

The attitudes of the first-time donors and all the HOSA members who will volunteer their services at the drive will undoubtedly set an example for the rest of the student body and the entire community. We’re very proud of this community of young people, says Pat Dolge, Blood Drive co-chair. They’re coming forward when we need them, and that’s what the spirit of this day is all about. Barbara J. Buchanan, Ms. Dolge’s co-chair, agrees: There is a dire need for blood donors in our community. These young people are stepping forward to fill that need.

If you’re inspired by the hard work and caring of these students, you too can donate blood, help out at the drive, or join one of the many other volunteer projects that will be part of the Pike United Way’s Fourth Annual Day of Caring. The drive is sponsored by the American Red Cross, the United Way, the Pike County Chamber of Commerce, the Delaware Valley School District, and the Pike County Public Libraries. Sign up to donate at any Pike Public Library or the Chamber of Commerce, or call the United Way office at (570) 296-9980 or (888) 306-6963 to make an appointment. Walk-ins donors are also welcome. Upon receiving the proclamation, Blood Drive Co-Chair, Barbara J. She said that their volunteerism was deeply appreciated by the United Way, and the blood donors and volunteers.

Milford Diner Supports 9/11 Memorial Blood Drive

Have you stopped by the Milford Diner lately? If not, you’re missing two great opportunities to learn more about Pike County’s 2nd Annual 9/11 Memorial Blood Drive, and, of course, to enjoy the Diner’s delicious meals. This week the Diner proudly demonstrates its support of community values with the introduction of new placemats promoting the blood drive. I really believe in this, and I always have, says Luanne Nelson, Diner manager.

Sponsored by the Pike County United Way, the Pike Chamber of Commerce, the Delaware Valley School District, the Pike County Public Libraries, and the Wayne-Pike Chapter of the American Red Cross, the theme for this year’s Blood Drive is Together We Prepare. Just like last year, the blood drive is a part of the Pike United Way’s annual Day of Caring.

I’ve been giving blood since I was 17, says Nelson. There’s no reason to be afraid of donating. The Diner’s placemats will include all the information that potential donors need.

Pike County blood supply is at a critically low level right now. According to Dawn Ciorciari, Blood Services Coordinator for the American Red Cross, the area desperately needs more donations: Our area has less than a two-day supply, Ciorciari says, adding that the ideal level is a five- to seven- day supply.

The Milford Diner has always been so supportive, says Barbara J. Buchanan, co-chair of this year’s Blood Drive and United Way board member. We always approach them because they’re such a family-friendly place. We’ve become our own family: the United Way, the Red Cross, and the Diner.

Pat Dolge, Ms. Buchanan’s co-chair and United Way board member, adds that all blood donors this year will receive a free Day of Caring t-shirt courtesy of Citizens Bank, a flashlight/radio combo, a blood drop pin, and a chance to win an American Red Cross disaster pack.

The placemats include all the information you need to donate at this year’s drive. The drive will be held at the Delaware Valley Middle School gym on Saturday, September 11th, from 10 AM to 4 PM. The Red Cross suggests that potential donors make appointments, but walk-ins are also welcome. To make an appointment, call TerriAnne at the United Way at (570) 296-9980 or (888) 306-6963, or sign yourself up at any Pike County Public Library or the Pike Chamber of Commerce. United Way Partners with Home Depot for 4th Annual Day of Caring

Home Depot’s Store Manager Paul Carney and Special Service Supervisor Lanar Makuta

Matamoras Home Depot is getting ready for the United Way of Pike County’s 4th Annual Day of Caring. We will be sending out Team Depot to assist where we can on September 11th says Paul Carney, Home Depot’s Store Manager. Team Depot is comprised of a group of community-minded volunteers from Home Depot’s staff who regularly go out in the community to provide support. They were there to refurbish Pike United Way’s sign, they were there at the Pike County Family Community Fair helping kids build wooden planters; they’re there in the Home Depot parking lot on the first Saturday of each month teaching kids about woodworking and each year they participate in a fire safety program for kids. Paul added In addition to the Day of Caring, our store will participate in the Home Depot’s Nationwide Week of Service (Sept. 27th Oct. 2nd) in which employees volunteer over 250,000 hours of work to improve and beautify their communities. According to Lanar Makuta, Home Depot’s Special Service Supervisor, our most recent volunteer effort is working with kids on woodworking projects at Ronald McDonald Camp (for kids with cancer) at Camp Timber Tops.

When asked why they get so involved with our community Paul says, We care. We want to be seen as the old corner hardware store, the place where you can get friendly help from someone who has a stake in our community not just a big retail outlet , and adds, local businesses get so much from the local community we have a responsibility to be a good neighbor not just take, but give. Lanar says it’s rewarding for their volunteer staff as well, they come back from volunteering with so many good stories about their experiences, the happy faces of the kids that get to walk away with something they’ve made it’s incredibly uplifting.

Team Depot will be assigned one of the Day of Caring community projects on Saturday September 11th. They, along with the other volunteers, will meet for breakfast sponsored by The Tom Quick Inn in Milford at 7:45 in the morning. Everyone will get their work assignments and Day of Caring t-shirts courtesy of Citizens Bank and then drive to their worksites. If you or your business want to join with Team Depot and be a good neighbor volunteer at this years’ Day of Caring call Pike United Way at 570-296-9980 and we’ll tell you how easy it is to get involved.

Read While You Bleed at the 9/11 Memorial Blood Drive

The Pike County Public Library proudly continues its partnership in the Pike United Way/American Red Cross 2nd Annual 9/11 Memorial Blood Drive with the popular Read While You Bleed program. The memorial blood drive, which is also sponsored by the Pike County Chamber of Commerce and the Delaware Valley School District, will be held at the Delaware Valley Middle School gym on Saturday, September 11, from 10 AM to 4 PM, as part of the United Way’s Fourth Annual Day of Caring.

What is Read While You Bleed ? According to Virginia Harris, Pike County Public Library director, the library will be purchasing a wide variety of magazines to provide interesting reading for the blood donors. During the waiting period both before and after giving blood, the library will make sure the donors have plenty of reading material on hand, Ms. Harris says.

The library’s generosity is especially important this year. The American Red Cross in Washington, D.C. has declared an emergency blood shortage this summer, while the American Red Cross branch of NEPA calls our area’s blood supply dangerously low. Without more blood on the shelves, the Red Cross cannot ensure that hospitals will have the blood they need to treat all patients. Because only 5 percent of the eligible population actually donates blood, any incentive to donate, like the Read While You Bleed program, helps the Red Cross tremendously.

Ms. Harris adds that the library will be sending two staff members, Catherine Hansen and Linda Casaburri, to help out at the blood drive in any way they can. You, too, can assist the Red Cross in its urgent call for blood donations. Sign up to donate at any Pike County Public Library, or call the United Way office at (570) 296-9980 or (888) 306-6963 to make an appointment. Walk-ins donors are also welcome. Chamber of Commerce Supports Memorial Blood Drive

Blood donors at this year’s 2nd Annual 9/11 Memorial Blood Drive will be well taken care of, thanks to the Pike County Chamber of Commerce and Jorgensen’s Deli. Canteen refreshments and lunch for the volunteers will be sponsored by the Chamber and made possible by a generous discount from Jorgensen’s. The American Red Cross 9/11 Memorial Blood Drive, a part of the Pike County United Way’s annual Day of Caring, is sponsored by the Chamber, the United Way, and the Red Cross, as well as the Pike County Public Library and the Delaware Valley School District, all of whom are offering their help so that this year’s blood drive will be a huge success.

The Chamber has always been committed to community events, such as the Memorial Blood Drive, that promote public cooperation and important values of volunteerism and service, says Dave Wilson, Chamber President. He adds, We really appreciate Jorgensen’s generosity, and I’m sure the blood drive volunteers will, too. Thanks to the good will of the Chamber and Jorgensen’s, the theme of this year’s blood drive Together We Prepare seems especially pertinent.

If you would like to be a part of this year’s blood drive, either as a donor or as a volunteer, please call TerriAnne at the Pike United Way at (570) 296-9980 or (888) 306-6963. You can also get all the information you need from the Chamber of Commerce; call (570) 296-8700, or stop by the Chamber, in the old Callahan House on Route 209 near the Delaware Bridge, to sign up. Walk-in donors to the blood drive are also welcome.

Besides the great snacks from Jorgensen’s, donors will receive a free United Way Day of Caring t-shirt, a flashlight/radio combo, a blood drop pin, and a chance to win an American Red Cross disaster pack. They will also receive a thank-you letter from the Pike County United Way, and, if they wish, their names will be included in next year’s Pike County Volunteer Corps Honor Roll. Brigid Andersen: the First Volunteer to sign up for United Way’s 2004 Day of Caring

Brigid Andersen pictured in front of United Way of Pike County’s office.

The United Way of Pike County’s Fourth Annual Day of Caring received its’ first volunteer application, earlier this month, from Brigid Andersen, a young lady dedicated to helping her community. Although she is just entering the 11th grade at Delaware Valley High School, Brigid has already developed a strong sense of community. There’s a lot of things that need to be done , says Brigid, kids need to just get out there and do something.

She sure takes her own advice. She’s recently logged over 100 hours of volunteer work. Brigid has volunteered in a thrift store, in a senior center and in a day care. I really want to work but I’m too young. Volunteering gives me the chance to get experience in all different things. Brigid’s goal is to go to college and someday be an actor. I get to play different roles at the places I volunteer. With the seniors, I am the younger person learning from their histories, when I’m at the day care I’m the older sister and when I’m at the thrift store I am a customer service person. When asked what keeps her going back to her volunteer positions she says, I like to meet new people. When I go to volunteer with the elderly I make a new friend everyday , and adds, I get so much from doing this, it makes me feel good.

This is Brigid’s first Day of Caring experience. She heard about The Day of Caring from her friend, Jackie, and adds, Jackie told me about how much fun the Day of Caring is so I thought I would give it a try. I signed up to do organizing and stocking work and maybe some outside cleaning or landscaping but I’ll do whatever they need me to do. Brigid is quick to point out that she couldn’t do all these wonderful things without the support of her mom, She drives me wherever I need to go , says Brigid. But her eyes really light up when she’s asked about her soon being able to drive herself, That will be great! We think Brigid is pretty great too.

If you would like to join Brigid and the other happy volunteers at this year's Day of Caring or 9-11 Memorial Blood Drive call Pike United Way at 570-296-998. The 4th annual Day of Caring is September 11, 2004 and starts with a free breakfast at 7:45am sponsored by The Tom Quick Inn in Milford. All volunteers will get a Day of Caring t-shirt courtesy of Citizens Bank and many great memories to keep forever. For information about all Pike United Way community initiatives please visit

Satzger went on to say The Day of Caring is a United Way initiative we are proud to support. Christine Obser, Day of Caring Co-Chair noted that the United Way has partnered with Citizens Bank in the past with programs like the 3rd Annual Holiday Gift Stockings and Work Wardrobe Clothing Drives to provide for needy Pike families. Citizens Bank truly evokes the spirit of Offering Hope, Building Futures added Obser.

We hope Pike county residents will follow Citizens Bank’s lead and join us as volunteers for the 4th Annual Day of Caring which will be held on Saturday, September 11th. said Mike Donlon, Day of Caring Co-Chair. The day begins at 7:45 AM when volunteers will get their work assignments, enjoy breakfast sponsored by the Tom Quick Inn in Milford and then drive to their worksites. Along with a day of great memories, volunteers will receive a Citizen’s Bank sponsored Day of Caring t-shirt, letter of thanks from the United Way, and if they wish, their names will be included in next year’s Pike County Volunteer Corps Honor Roll. If you want to give a day of work, give a day of caring call Pike United Way at 570-296-9980 and we’ll tell you how easy it is to get involved.

Exciting Day of Caring Projects At Camp Speers-Eljabar YMCA

Happy Day of Caring Volunteers.

For the fourth consecutive year, Camp Speers-Eljabar YMCA has come up with some exciting projects for United Way of Pike County’s Day of Caring. They were the first local agency to sign up for volunteers this year. Our partnership with Pike United Way and the Day of Caring is a natural , says Heidi Chobot, Camp Speers’ Community Coordinator, The YMCA and United Way have the same purpose and values: to serve the community. The Day of Caring enables us to get a lot done in little time stated Heidi, I would encourage all community organizations to take advantage of this opportunity to complete projects that could not be accomplished without the help of volunteers.

This year’s Day of Caring will be on Saturday, September 11th. The day kicks-off at 7:45 AM with breakfast provided by The Tom Quick Inn in Milford. There, the volunteers will get their work assignments, free Day of Caring t-shirt and then drive to their worksites. The volunteers working that day at Camp Speers-Eljabar are sure to have a great time. According to Heidi, Day of Caring is a wonderful event. It puts us in touch with young people (and those still young at heart) who are willing to give back to their community. It gives us a chance to involve the volunteers in what we are all about here at the YMCA. And every so often one of the volunteers wants to stay. We’ve hired some of our best staff from Day of Caring volunteers. In addition to breakfast and a t-shirt, the Day of Caring volunteers will get a free lunch at the camps’ Hay Center dining hall and a certificate of appreciation from the YMCA. However , says Heidi, the best thing about volunteering is after a day of hard work and fun they’ll go home with a warm feeling in their heart being satisfied that they did something good for their community. This year, the camp’s projects are varied. They include staining storage cubbies in the camp’s overnight cabins, splitting wood, cutting brush, trail clean-up, creating new paths from the parking area and, for those adapted to less physical work, office (clerical) work.

If your non-profit community agency has a single day volunteer project or if you would like to volunteer for the 4th annual Day of Caring or the 2nd annual 9-11 Memorial Blood Drive call the United Way at 570-296-9980 or visit their website at unitedwaypike.org. Peggy Emanuel Looking Forward to Her First Blood Donation on 9-11-04

First Time Donors Welcome at 9-11 Blood Drive

I’m a first time blood donor. When I first read about the (9-11 Memorial) blood drive in the papers, I knew instantly that I wanted to participate , says Peggy Emanuel, who is donating for the first time at the 9-11 Memorial Blood drive at Delaware Valley Middle School, and adds I’m not sure if it was the significance of the date, 9-11, or if it’s because we’re at war and this is something positive I can do.

Whether this is your first time, or your one hundred and first time, United Way of Pike County and our local Red Cross chapter wants you to call today and commit to donate on 9-11. We are at a crucially low level of blood in our local supply according to Dawn Ciorciari who works for the local Red Cross, we’re hoping that more people will want to give this year. Last year the 9-11 Memorial Blood Drive raised 58 useable pints. This year’s goal is higher. Peggy is looking forward to joining the donor’s club and says, I feel really good about my decision and look forward to being a part of this wonderful group.

If you, too, would like to be a part of this wonderful group please call Pike United Way and register your name at 570-296-9980 or visit your local library and sign up there. For more information about the blood drive or the 4th Annual Day of Caring call 570-296-9980 or go to

Gerry Hansen Appointed Pike United Way’s Campaign Chairperson

United Way of Pike County’s new Campaign Chairperson: Gerry Hansen.

Gerry Hansen has been living in Pike County since 1985. During those, almost, twenty years he has worn many hats. He’s been a Pike County Commissioner, the President of The Pike County Chamber of Commerce and presently sits on the board of Bon Secours Hospital and United Way of Pike County. Of course he is most recognizable as the affable co-partner (with Ed and Karen Loeschorn) of The Dimmick Inn & Steakhouse in Milford. Now he is also the Campaign Chairperson for this year’s local United Way campaign. Gerry has a strong connection to our community, I have a great belief in giving back to the community that supports me as a business and property owner, says Gerry, and adds, everyone can contribute in some way to making our community better. We all have a stake.

Gerry says he became involved with Pike United Way, about a year ago when a friend of mine approached me with the idea. He was immediately impressed with United Way of Pike County’s policy of keeping money donated right here in Pike County, that is very important to me; there are a lot of organizations that send their donations to a national corporation not Pike United Way. Over 99.5% of the money stays here helping our community.

When asked about taking on his new responsibility, as Campaign Chairperson, of raising Pike United Way’s new goal of $115,000 Gerry says, We have a wonderfully supportive community here in Pike County which will make my job a lot easier. Gerry points out that there are many Pike County residents who would like to give to Pike United Way but work outside of Pike County and don’t know how easy it is to set-up a payroll deduction, 65% of the workforce who live in Pike County work outside Pike County. They should know that if they want to donate directly from their wages all they have to do is give the donation code (#40129) to their personnel department and their donation will be automatically sent to United Way of Pike County. It’s an easy way to help their neighbors.

For more information about Pike United Way’s new campaign or for information about volunteering for this years’ Day of Caring or 9-11 Memorial Blood Drive call 570-296-9980 or 888-306-6963. Pike United Way’s 9-11 Memorial Blood Drive

Some of the many happy donors from last year's 9-11 Memorial Blood Drive

It’s time to sign up for United Way of Pike County’s 2nd Annual 9-11 Memorial Blood Drive on Saturday September 11, 2004. The theme for this years’ blood-drive is Together We Prepare.

This years’ 9-11 Memorial Blood Drive will be at Delaware Valley Middle School’s Gym in Matamoras on Routes 209/6 on Saturday September 11th from 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. This allows plenty of time for people to arrange their busy schedules. There’s plenty of parking available at the school. Last year, many of those who volunteered for the Day of Caring took advantage of the 4:00 P.M. closing time to donate as well.

Although walk-ins are welcome, advance sign-up is suggested. To sign-up call TerriAnne at Pike United Way 570-296-9980 or 888-306-6963. Sign-up sheets are also available at any Pike County Public Library or The Pike County Chamber of Commerce on Route 209 at the old Callahan House, near the Delaware Bridge.

Along with the Wayne-Pike Chapter of The American Red Cross, Pike United Way wants to emphasize how critically low our local blood supply is. According to Dawn Ciorciari, Blood Services Coordinator for American Red Cross, Part of being prepared for any disaster is having blood available for people in need. Our area has less than a two-day supply and even less of type O negative. Ideally, we need to have a five to seven day supply.

Since this years’ 9-11 Memorial Blood Drive falls on the same day as Pike United Way’s Day of Caring, all those who volunteer their blood will get a free Day of Caring t-shirt. Blood donors will also receive other great gifts: a flashlight radio combo, a blood drop pin and an entry into a raffle to win an American Red Cross Disaster Pack. Donors will receive a thank you letter from Pike United Way and, if they wish, their names will be included in next years’ Pike County Volunteer Corps Honor Roll. Of course, the best gift donors receive is the good feeling they get from knowing they’ve done something good for their, Pike County, neighbors.

Last year’s 9-11 Memorial Blood Drive took in 58 pints of useable blood. The American Red Cross, The Pike County Chamber of Commerce, Delaware Valley Middle School and The Pike County Library are partnering with Pike United Way to make this year’s drive even more successful. However, they can’t do it without you!

UNITED WAY'S 4th ANNUAL DAY OF CARING ON SEPTEMBER 11TH

Give a day of work, give a day of caring: the Fourth Annual Day of Caring sponsored by United Way of Pike County is scheduled for Saturday, September 11, 2004 along with the Second Annual 9/11 Memorial Blood Drive sponsored by the United Way of Pike County, Pike County Chamber of Commerce and Pike County Public Library.

Co-Chairs Christine Obser and Mike Donlon reported that last year 183 volunteers, age 14 or older provided a single day of service to 14 local organizations with over 20 projects receiving much-needed services. The value of volunteer labor was more than $10,000 in one day. Local high school students were very active participants. Some volunteers were so impressed by the work of the organizations they helped, that they went back to help again and again over the course of this past year. Day of Caring volunteers were listed in the Pike County Volunteer Corps 2004 Honor Roll.

Some of the projects completed last year included painting offices, helping the disabled, organizing clothes for the needy, refreshing camp facilities, updating Pike County human resources website, creating folders to assist learning English as a second language, repairing children's playgrounds and assisting the Public Library.

Last year's first 9-11 Memorial Blood Drive was attended by 75 people and 58 usable pints of blood were collected. There were 21 first-time blood donors and 9 donors had donated over a gallon of blood in their lifetimes.

The Day of Caring begins at 7:45 AM with breakfast at the Tom Quick Inn, sponsored by Abe Wohl and Jeanine and Gary Hodge. Every volunteer will receive a t-shirt and a letter of thanks from United Way. You, along with other volunteers, will work to complete service projects for Pike County non-profit agencies from 9:00AM to 3:00PM. Lunch will be provided at the site. There will be media coverage at most sites.

John Drake Welcomed to Pike United Way Board

At its’ meeting on July 22nd Pike United Way welcomes its’ newest board member, John Drake. John has lived in the Pike County area his whole life and whether working in his position as Northampton Community College’s Administrator, as a member of the Board of Wallenpaupack Area School District and Northeast Educational Intermediate Unit #19 or in his new role on Pike United Way’s Board of Directors, John is singularly focused on our community’s needs and our role in making it a better place to live for our children. If you’ve benefited from living in this beautiful community I strongly believe you need to give back, he says. John has also volunteered for the Tafton Fire Company for the last twelve years and understands how important volunteers are to all of us. He recommends volunteering to everyone. He recognizes how hard it might seem to get started with that first volunteer job, But, he says, the more you do - the easier it is to do more. And, he points out, the more you give the more you get back. Once you get started, you won’t want to stop. John has three children in the Wallenpaupack School District schools and notes, As a parent, I have a vested interest in helping to make sure the quality of life in Pike County remains good for my children.

Pike United Way Seeks Community Projects for 4th Annual Day of Caring

Last year almost 200 volunteers, age 14 or older provided a single day of service to local non-profit organizations that asked for help with projects that could be done in a single day. The volunteers contributed a total of more than 1,000 hours of labor at an estimated dollar value of $10,000. Some volunteers were so impressed by the work of the organizations they helped, that they went back to help again and again over the course of this past year.

Projects that were completed last year included painting and repairing facilities, mulching and marking trails, office filing and clerical work, organizing computer files, outside clean up and maintenance for disabled seniors and stocking and organizing food pantry storage areas

This year the Day of Caring will be held on Saturday, September 11th. The workday begins at 7:45AM with breakfast at the Tom Quick Inn. A team of volunteers will work to complete the projects at your site from 9:00AM to 3:00PM. Each volunteer receives a Day of Caring t-shirt and a thank you letter from United Way.

OFFERING HOPE, BUILDING FUTURES THE UNITED WAY!

Pike United Way Welcomes Two New Board Members

At their June 17th board meeting, United Way of Pike County welcomed two new additions to it’s’ board of directors: Sue Robbins and Mike Donlon. Pike United Way is very pleased to have Sue and Mike come on-board, they bring varied and extensive community development experience to their new positions.

Sue Robbins has worked for the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare since 1975. She has lived and worked for twenty-six of those years, right here, in Pike County. During that time Sue has seen increasing need for the services Pike United Way helps fund. Pike United Way helps fund services that the government doesn’t, says Sue, Without their support many people would just fall through the cracks. We don’t realize how quick our lives can turn around. It just takes one missed paycheck or a medical emergency for many of us to need these services. Sue often refers clients to some of the agencies funded by Pike United Way, I’ve really had a chance to find out how great and important these local agencies are. About three years ago Sue was asked by a long time friend to be on Pike United Way’s Allocations Committee. She points out that, through this experience, she learned a lot about how Pike United Way allocates funds, Our local United Way really checks out the agencies they fund. They make sure the public’s money is spent wisely. Sue is also very enthusiastic about volunteering. I volunteered my daughter (Mariah) to help at Pike United Way the year before she left for college, she says, Mariah had such a good experience. She would come home and tell me about other volunteer opportunities I got excited too! When asked about how she finds the time to volunteer with a full time job Sue says, I had a child who left and so I had more time. I wanted to do something to help the community. At her position as Casework Supervisor Sue sees the human need first hand and knows how precarious our living situations can be, and adds, I really feel that but for the grace of God….

Mike Donlon is as comfortable with a hammer and nails building homes as with a pen and paper sitting on advisory boards. As one of the working leaders of Habitat for Humanity of Pike County, Mike sees the direct benefit derived from getting involved in our community. Sometimes I think people don’t appreciate the rewards they get from volunteering, Mike continues, but when they try it once, I’ll bet they get hooked. Mike sure got hooked. As well as working with Pike United Way and Habitat for Humanity he is also a Board member of the Pike County Developmental Center and with a slight twinkle in his eye he will proudly admit his leadership role in the Tri-State Irish American Society. He’s lived in Pike County since 1968 and full time for about fifteen of those years. Mike helped out with Pike United Way’s Day of Caring last year and is looking forward to this years’ event (September 11, 2004), I hope more people will come out this year and find out how nice it feels to get hooked!
